Guest: Fernando León Jacomino. Vice-President 2005-2010 (and interim President in 2010) of the Instituto Cubano del Libro (Cuban Book Institute). For a good part of the 2000s, Fernando was involved as a cultural policymaker and worked closely with the Union of Young Communists, the Hermanos Saíz Association for young artists and, more generally, the Ministry of Culture.
However, he is also a published poet and a researcher, specialising in Cuban theatre, especially street theatre and film adaptations of theatre. In 2009, Fernando was awarded the Razón de Ser research scholarship, by the Alejo Carpentier Foundation, Havana.
On this occasion, Fernando will talk about Cuban cinema, especially the processes that made possible the founding of the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC) and about the relationship between Cuban cinema and reality over the last fifty years. He will be joined by Dr Par Kumaraswami, Lecturer in Latin American Cultural Studies and specialist in revolutionary Cuban culture, University of Manchester.
